Probing magnetic orbitals and Berry curvature with circular dichroism in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

چکیده

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) can probe localized excitations at selected atoms in materials, including particle-hole transitions between the valence and conduction bands. These are governed by fundamental properties of corresponding Bloch wave-functions, orbital magnetic degrees freedom, quantum geometric such as Berry curvature. In particular, angular momentum (OAM), which is closely linked to curvature, exhibit a nontrivial dependence. We demonstrate how information on OAM textures be extracted from circular dichroism RIXS. Based accurate modeling with first-principles treatment key ingredient -- light-matter interaction we simulate dichroic RIXS spectra for prototypical transition metal dichalcogenide MoSe$_2$ two-dimensional topological insulator 1T$^\prime$-MoS$_2$. Guided an intuitive picture optical selection rules, discuss momentum-dependent manifests itself signal if one controls transfer. Our calculations performed typical experimental geometries parameter regimes, possibility observing predicted forthcoming experiments. Thus, our work establishes new avenue curvature states materials.

Probing hydrogen bonding orbitals: resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering of aqueous NH3.

To probe the influence of hydrogen bonding on the electronic structure of ammonia, gas phase and aqueous NH3 have been investigated using soft X-ray absorption (XAS), resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering (RIXS), and electronic structure calculations including dynamical effects. Strong spectral differences in the XAS scans as well as in the RIXS spectra between gas phase and aqueous NH3 are ...

Linear dichroism in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to molecular spin-orbit states.

Polarization-dependent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is shown to be a new probe of molecular-field effects on the electronic structure of isolated molecules. A combined experimental and theoretical analysis explains the linear dichroism observed in Cl 2p RIXS following Cl 1s excitation in HCl and CF3Cl as due to molecular-field effects, including singlet-triplet exchange, indicatin...

Probing Magnetic Polarities of Magnetotactic Bacteria by X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism in a Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscope

Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) are a group of fascinating organisms that can biomineralize chains of nano-scale (~50 nm) single crystals of magnetite (Fe3O4) or greigite (Fe3S4), known as magnetosomes [1]. The magnetosome chain passively aligns the magnetotactic bacteria with the Earth’s geomagnetic field lines, a behaviour called magnetotaxis. This, along with oxygen chemotaxis, is believed to g...
